I first met Dr. Butzon at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) which is my place of employment. Dr. Steve Butzon is a very special, capable, and knowledgeable medical professional. He has provided me with great relief from an extremely annoying and exasperating eye disease – superior oblique myokymia (SOM). SOM causes the eye to involuntarily rotate in the eye socket thereby producing double vision along with headaches and sometimes nausea. I have lived with SOM for 3-1/2 years and have seen two neuro-ophthalmologists during that time. They treated the problem with numerous drugs and surgery. The drugs did not work properly and the surgery produced only minimal relief. Dr. Butzon’s use of a prism lens for my right eye and a correct lens prescription to treat my SOM has enabled me to see very clearly with only minimal eye rotation remaining. Much of the discomfort previously experienced is now a thing of the past.

I’ve been to two or three different eye doctors in the past before I found Dupage Optical in 2010. I’m writing this the exact same day that I went back to get another exam and pair of glasses (Jan 18, 2014). They exceeded my expectations from the very beginning and they have given me the best pair of eyeglasses that I’ve had the pleasure of wearing by far. It seems that the other eye doctors I went to never pinpointed my correct prescription. My eyes are good and normal for the most part, but I have a slight lazy left eye and they are the first ones to add a prism feature so that both of my eyes work together to achieve perfect balance and equilibrium. I have a tremendous amount of respect for them as a professional practice as they are so kind, they know what they’re doing, and they truly are about helping people and leaving you satisfied with your eye wear since they are all about quality. The receptionists and assistants are also very professional and kind. I also appreciate the fact that they helped me as a returning customer because I wasn’t in the best financial situation this second time around and so they were very generous. I’m definitely going to be a longtime customer because they deserve it.

On the recommendation from my wife I made an appointment to see Dr. Cho, for my red, irritated eyes and she prescribed drops for my dry eyes. Who knew Dry Eyes was a disease? Within days, the irritation had subsided along with the redness, but I did not expect the cloudiness to be gone. I’m not sure I even described the cloudiness to her. Dr. Cho referred me to her partner Dr. Butzon for the disease. I was wowed! I have seen many eye doctors over the years but none ever addressed Dry Eye Disease, color deficiency or the prism problem either. Seeing so clear and crisp in the exam room just wowed me. Walking out the exam room I felt this could have contributed to falling asleep while reading, dry eye disease, eye strain and incorrect lenses. You have saved my vision and my golf game. About five years ago, I went to my primary care physician and mentioned some difficulty with my vision. He said it could be the beginning of glaucoma and I ignored it. An avid golfer with a single digit handicap at the time, I noticed some changes in my ability to clearly see the golf ball at address. As most serious golfers know, consistency is key to playing golf at a high level. In reviewing practice videos of my golf swing I noticed a significant change from a few years ago. Unknowingly, I began to make physical adjustments in my stance to compensate for field vision changes. Coaching football one of the other coaches commented on my red eyes. My work requires reading, research and I assumed it was eyestrain, however realized it had become difficult to see someone standing to the left or right of me. Using over the counter eye drops helped the redness but not the vision issues. My fiancée convinced me to see Dr. Butzon. On my first visit, Dr. Butzon diagnosed me with glaucoma. Glaucoma? All these years! After two weeks, using drops twice a day, the improvement in my vision is like night and day. Let’s hope now my golf game gets back on par! Thank you Dr. Butzon. Jeffrey F.

Dr. Butzon has saved my life. People read that often but don’t realize that my life is measured in being able to do the things I’m passionate about. First, the old adage, “the best way to master a subject is to teach it,” is most definitely true. As an active Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) and Pilot, I loved to fly. On my days off, I was at the hanger. Transporting planes from one airport to another is a quick trip and something I had done many times. That life-altering day in 1985 changed my life. Upon take-off the plane malfunctioned and I was able to land the plane and save myself but not with out damage. The fire caused corneal scarring and grounded me for life. Having seen several doctors and each had no real solution for me other than to accept the fact that I would never fly again. My wife had found a new doctor for me, said he was in our insurance plan, and convinced me to see one more doctor. Little did I know then he would save my life. He said I work closely with several associates in the field and I believe we have a plan! He recommended a specialist who immediately said we could do a corneal transplant. Today, as you see I this picture, my follow up is a confirmation. I am a happy man and my life is mine again! I can start flying and continue as a CFI. I am grateful to my wife for convincing me to see Dr. Butzon and for his motto. “Our vision is to help your vision”, without him I would not have my life passion back!

Where Can a 3 Year Old Have a Screening Eye Exam??? At my 3 yr old’s checkup, her doc said she needs an eye as part of routine things done to a 3 yr old. We went to Dupage Optical in Addison. The Dr. there is awesome and does only what is needed. He has lots of really great equipment and was super kid friendly. My son actually had fun! I would say worth the drive.

In January of last year 2010, I came in to see Dr. Butzon for my regular checkup. Dr.Butzon was going thru his regular routine work-up on me. His regular eye exam happens to include a picture, exam of the BACK of my eye. When he performed this he noticed bleeding in the back of my eyeball. He told me this could be a sign of high blood pressure, and I should see my Family Doctor ASAP. I went to see my General Physcian, and sure enough my blood pressure was sky high. My Doctor put me on medication, and it is under control. On my last visit, Dr Butzon re-checked this, and the blood in the back of my eye had re-absorbed. So, actually in hindsight he saved me from a possible stroke. The check of the eye so closely, caught something, that a quicky exam from some mall would never would have. So there is a difference in who exams your eyes.

I frequently would receive headaches at school and work. I would have to take Advil constantly to combat my pain. I figured it was my eyes causing the pain since my glasses are held together by tape. I called around to see if anyone could take a person without insurance for free. Despite being hopeful, doctors continually turned me down. I was hoping for some pro bono work. I skewered the internet and found Vision USA. I contacted them immediately and qualified for their program. I had to wait 2 months, but I was happy to get help. I have learned that only people with money and/or insurance get speedy care while I have to wait for a charity. I received a letter from Vision USA that included a free eye exam at Dupage Optical with Dr. Butzon. I was extremely happy to see that someone would assist a person who did not have anything and needed services. I went in expecting to be treated differently (because most professionals treat me differently because I do not have insurance). I was treated differently, but in a good way. I was greeted and helped without reservation and prejudice. I felt like I actually was getting care. I was expecting to look for eye frames on the Craiglist, because I knew I couldn’t afford glasses in the practice, but I was assisted in getting glasses as well as my exam. Through the years I have found that the world can be cruel when you don’t have insurance and/or money. You learn to be resilient and humble as others get treated with royalty. I hopes that others would help someone in need, I found the majority do not. But through this charity and Dupage Optical I received the care that I needed that enables me to function throughout the day without pain.

I have been a patient for many years. My eyes were damaged when I was 7 by Measles and I have bad astigmatism. When We moved from Bensenville to Wheeling 5 years ago I stayed with Dr. Butzon because of the great care I have always received. This August at my visit I was told I needed Cataract Surgery.
